STUDIO MHL X ZOUTERIK X SCHIERMONNIKOOG

By Monique Van Bruggen

Sometimes work and pleasure come together in a truly special way.
Last week, we spent some time on Schiermonnikoog with our family, a unique island where you leave your car behind, where there is a charming village, and where you are surrounded by vast natural beauty.
Between cycling through the dunes and walking along the beach, we had something special planned: a visit to Zouterik, the shop owned by Janet and Tanja.

Janet started Zouterik and now runs the shop together with Tanja.
For almost ten years, Janet has been selling our jewelry in her beautiful shop. Our collaboration became even more special when Janet found two small shells on the beach of Schiermonnikoog.
She brought them to us, and together we made a mold from them.
These shells, cast in silver and optionally gilded, have since become part of their collection — and are still loved by visitors who want to take a piece of Schiermonnikoog home with them.

Zouterik exudes calm and simplicity: soft colors, a serene atmosphere, and a collection of beautiful, fair, and carefully selected products.
It was truly special to see the shop, to find our jewelry displayed there, and to feel the care and love put into everything.

We have embraced Schiermonnikoog in our hearts and are happy to share below our favorite spots from last week.

Food & Drink:

  • Wad Anderz – We had a delicious lunch here with a view of the Wadden Sea, the sky, and the ever-changing tides.

  • Strandtent De Marlijn – After a lovely bike ride and a pleasant walk along the beach, we relaxed here. It’s the northernmost beach pavilion in the Netherlands.

  • Schiermonnikoger Vishandel – We enjoyed tasty fries and kibbeling here.

For the Kids:

Things to See:

  • The Shell Museum Paal 14 – Enthusiastically run by the owner, Thijs de Boer, who shares fascinating stories about all kinds of shells and marine life. Thijs and his family have personally collected all the shells from around the world.

  • Atelier Wrakhout – Janet’s father displays his beachcombing finds and handmade boats made from driftwood. The kids were given a message in a bottle to add their own note and (secretly) throw into the sea. Who knows, maybe someone in Denmark will find it! Next door, Janet's mother runs a spinning studio where she makes things like wool sheep. Definitely worth a visit!

The village itself is lovely to explore, and be sure to stop for a drink at Hotel van der Werff.

We also spent a lot of time cycling on the beautifully maintained bike paths. There’s so much more to do on Schiermonnikoog, we definitely will return.
